Most NDIS participants have heard about their right to choice and control, but many don’t realise just how far that right really goes. It’s one of the most important parts of the NDIS — the idea that you should be the one making decisions about your supports, your goals, and your future.
At National Support Provider, we often meet participants who tell us they didn’t know they could choose their own workers, change their provider, or even have a say in how and when their supports are delivered. Some people believe they just have to accept whatever their provider offers, but that’s not true. Your NDIS plan is designed to give you power — the power to live life your way.
Choice and control means you get to decide who provides your supports, when they come, what they do, and how your funding is managed. You can choose to work with a provider that listens to you and respects your preferences. You can even decide whether you want your plan to be managed by yourself, a plan manager, or by the NDIA directly. Each option gives you different levels of flexibility and independence — and a good provider should always help you understand those choices clearly.
Your right to choice also means you can select your own support workers. You should feel comfortable, respected, and understood by the people who support you in your home or community. Whether that means finding someone with shared interests, cultural understanding, or simply the right personality fit, you have the right to choose.
Control also extends to how your supports are delivered. You might prefer assistance in your home, or maybe you’d rather get out into the Geelong community — visiting friends, going shopping, or joining local activities. You can decide what works best for you.
Your goals are another important area of control. They don’t have to stay the same forever. If your life changes, your plan can change too. You can review your plan, update your goals, and shape your supports around what you want to achieve next. A supportive provider will walk with you through that process and make sure your voice is heard.
We often encourage participants to ask themselves a few simple questions: Do I feel listened to? Do I have the freedom to make changes when I need to? Am I working toward my goals, or just following a schedule someone else set? The answers to these questions can tell you whether you truly have choice and control.
At National Support Provider, we believe everyone deserves to feel confident and empowered in their NDIS journey. Our team works with participants across Geelong and the surrounding areas to make sure they get real say over their supports. We created a free guide, Your NDIS Choice & Control Handbook, to help participants understand all the areas where they have decision-making power and to show them what true choice and control can look like.
If you’re unsure whether your current provider is giving you full choice and control, we’d love to help. Download our free guide today or reach out for a chat about how we can make your plan work better for you — because your plan should always be about you.
